Well-baby and Well-child Visits

Well-baby and well-child visits are routine checkups for infants, children, and adolescents that track growth, development, and overall health. These visits are when your child's pediatrician checks milestones, gives vaccinations, screens for potential health concerns, and talks with you about nutrition, safety, and behavior.

Under the ACA, well-baby and well-child visits are classified as preventive services, which means they're covered at no cost to you ($0 copay, $0 coinsurance, no deductible) as long as you use an in-network provider. This applies to all ACA-compliant plans, regardless of metal tier.

The recommended schedule follows guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. During the first year, your baby typically has visits at birth, 3–5 days, and then at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. After that, visits happen at 15, 18, 24, and 30 months, then annually from ages 3 through 21.

Each visit typically includes a physical exam, height and weight measurements, developmental screenings, vision and hearing checks (at appropriate ages), and immunizations on the recommended schedule. The pediatrician will also discuss age-appropriate topics like safe sleep, car seat safety, nutrition, and screen time.

If something concerning comes up during a well-child visit, and the doctor orders additional tests or treatments, those follow-up services may not be free. Only the preventive portion of the visit itself is covered at $0.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are well-child visits really free, even on a Bronze plan?

Yes. All ACA-compliant plans must cover well-child visits as preventive services with zero cost-sharing — that means $0 copay and no deductible, even on a Bronze plan. You must use an in-network provider.

At what age do well-child visits stop being covered as preventive care?

The ACA covers preventive visits for children and adolescents through age 21, following the Bright Futures/AAP periodicity schedule. After that, adult preventive visit guidelines apply.
