Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is the annual window when anyone can enroll in, change, or cancel an ACA Marketplace health insurance plan — no qualifying event required. For 2026 coverage, the federal OEP runs from November 1 – January 15, 2026. Some state-based Marketplaces have different dates.

This is your primary opportunity each year to:

  • Enroll in a plan for the first time
  • Switch to a different plan or carrier
  • Add or remove dependents
  • Update your income and household information to adjust your subsidy

Plans selected during OEP typically take effect January 1 of the following year if you enroll by December 15. Enrollments completed between December 16 and January 15 usually start February 1.

Outside of OEP, you can only enroll or make changes if you have a Qualifying Life Event that triggers a Special Enrollment Period. Missing OEP without a qualifying event means waiting a full year for another opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to re-enroll every year even if I want to keep the same plan?

Yes — even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s worth reviewing during OEP every year. Insurers can change premiums, deductibles, formularies, and provider networks annually. A plan that was your best option last year may not be this year. Your broker can run a side-by-side comparison before the window closes.

What happens if I miss Open Enrollment?

If you miss OEP without a qualifying life event, you generally cannot enroll in Marketplace coverage until the next OEP. Exceptions include Medicaid and CHIP, which accept applications year-round. Short-term health plans are available outside OEP but are not ACA-compliant and do not qualify for subsidies.
